What Are Reverse Mount Wheels?

The answer is pretty simple. Reverse mount wheels, also called reverse drop center wheels, are aftermarket wheels designed to give your vehicle a whole new look. The term reverse mount or reverse drop center comes from how the tire is installed on the wheel versus a standard mount. Here’s what reverse mount wheels are and when and why you might choose them for your vehicle.

Why Are Some Tires Reverse Mounted?

Let’s start by defining the key feature of a reverse mount or reverse drop center wheel. That difference is called the drop center, which is the narrowest point on the inside of the wheel. Depending on where that drop center is located on the wheel, the tires will need to be installed either from the back or front of the wheel.

Reverse Mount: Mounted from the Back

Most factory-installed wheels are standard or front-mounted. That means the drop center will be near the face of the wheel and the tire can be installed from the front. A reverse drop center wheel in many cases gives your vehicle a different look but requires a specialized mount and dismount of the tire to avoid damaging the sidewall, rubber, and structure of the tire. It all depends on the offset and backspace. When you buy aftermarket wheels from Les Schwab, we have the tools and know-how to get your tires reverse mounted for either aesthetics or function.

When To Choose a Reverse Mount

Ultra-low-profile tires can require reverse mounting when the sidewall is too short and stiff to stretch over the rim using a front mount. Additionally, wheels with an extra-wide lip or deep dish are often reverse-mounted out of necessity. But everyone has a look they prefer. Typically, reverse-mounted wheels show more of the wheel lip for a more aggressive feel. Plus, the spokes of the wheel are often farther back against the hub, providing a modern look. Les Schwab customers who choose a reverse drop center often drive a performance vehicle or a lifted truck.

Does your vehicle have a larger brake package? A drop center mount can bring the drop center closer to the hub, allowing for more clearance. But overall, the choice is all about looks over function.

How To Tell if Your Wheels Are Reverse Mounted

There is little chance your wheels are reverse-mounted if you bought your car or truck new. But if you’re the second owner and the vehicle has aftermarket wheels, those assemblies could be reverse-mounted. Look for:

  • Wheel Lip Depth: If the outer lip is deeper than usual, offering a more aggressive look, it may be a reverse drop center.

  • Spoke Placement: When the spokes appear more recessed or near the back of the wheel, and the drop center is located behind the spokes, you’re likely using a reverse drop center.

  • Valve Stem Location: One of the most identifiable features of a reverse drop center is the invisible valve stem. If the valve stem is behind the wheel instead of facing out, your vehicle may have reverse-mount wheels. Additionally, if the valve stem appears to be at an odd angle or located on the flat part of the barrel rather than the stepped area, you could have a reverse mount.

How Reverse Mount Wheels Change Vehicle Care

Reserve mounting or choosing a reverse drop center wheel doesn’t change how a vehicle drives or its performance. Reverse drop center wheels do change how tires are mounted, dismounted, and balanced. The same equipment is used, but instead of mounting the tire with the back against the mounting machine, the front is facing down, and the tire is mounted from the back of the wheel.

At Les Schwab, we’re pros when it comes to reverse drop center mounts. Our process helps avoid damaging your wheels and tires, whether you choose a standard or reverse mount.
